Kripalu's Ayurvedic Education

Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health has introduced its School of Ayurveda, offering two levels of certification: Ayurvedic Practitioner and Ayurvedic Yoga Specialist.

Kripalu and Ayurvedic program director Hilary Garavaltis have enlisted leading U.S.-based Ayurvedic doctors and scholars to teach specific sections. The 720-hour Practitioner certification is spread over 18 months with one 3-day weekend per month. Yoga Specialist certification requires 280 hours over the program's first 7 months. Each weekend session entails twenty hours of class instruction. Subjects include history and philosophy; Sanskrit; the Ayurvedic approach to anatomy, physiology, pathology, digestion, and nutrition; herbal and massage therapies; pulse diagnosis; and Ayurveda and yoga.

Kripalu launched the school in January, expecting to attract about thirty students; instead, more than seventy enrolled. "There has been a void on the East Coast for the study of Ayurveda for about four years now", says Garavaltis. "Our school has attracted those who have been looking for a way to study Ayurveda without having to go out West."

Kripalu School of Ayurveda addresses the increasing demand for holistic approaches to healthcare. "There is a growing desire among the general population to take charge of their own health", explains Garavaltis. "Ayurveda is a wonderful system that teaches these skills. This desire for holistic healthcare has created the need for knowledgeable consultants in the field. The student body that came together for this first session feels ready to take on this new role."
