Before you bring that razor to your fresh skin, know this: You should be using a new razor at least once every two weeks. (Eeek, right?) Here are a few more tips to know before you shave, or wax this summer:
- Shaving: Always go in the direction of hair growth- that is down not up. You’ll reduce the likelihood of bumps and ingrown hairs. And be sure to use a shaving cream. Our favorite is Alba Botanica’s Very Emollient Foam Shave.
- Waxing: You’ll want to start with about six-weeks of growth. Patience ladies. If you go earlier you’ll just miss hairs that haven’t made their appearance. Test the temperature of the wax before you use it and apply the wax in the direction of the hair growth, and remove it going against the growth.
Now, you’ve removed the hair only to see a red, stubbly mess. Smooth the skin with a light lotion or crème, my personal favorite are witch hazel pads. If you’re really bumpy, try a crème made especially for soothing razor burn, including Kiehl’s Razor Bump Relief or use a cotton ball and apply a small amount of Witch Hazel.
Remember, after you’ve shaved or used a scrub, you’ll want to avoid the sun or apply your sunscreen before you even see the sun’s rays. Your skin is more sensitive!
