Your Daily Greens: One simple diet change to boost your health
A detox diet is great in theory, but I love food too much to give it up. So in lieu of a master cleanse, this New Year I propose we all go green… green drinks that is.
Green, according to fitness and body guru Andrea Orbeck (who happens to train several of the Victoria’s Secret models including Heidi Klum) puts many of her girls on a food program that includes major greenery. Why? To rid the system of stuck toxins and get the intestines moving smoothly. “Over time, our increased exposure and ingestion of our toxic and chemical environment, (incorrect eating habits of acid foods, hormones, GMO foods, chemicals in products and air pollutants, to name a few!) effects our digestive systems and consequently our body. Our intestines and colon become clogged; clogged pipes can inhibit nutrient absorption, digestion, rate of bowel movement and can even seep into our bloodstream, effecting our immunity and quality of energy,” says Orbeck, which is why she advises her clients to increase their green intake. Greens help to cleanse your system, removing stagnant build-up and toxins. Plus, she’s found that when you consume a lot of greens, you tend to have more of a glow!
Here is her quick recipe for a daily juice:
Body Ecology Juice
3 leaves romaine lettuce
3 leaves kale
1 cucumber
1 zucchini
1/4 apple
1/2 lemon (skin included)
1 finger ginger
Throw all of the above ingredients into a juicer or food processor (a Vita-Mix works great!). Adding ice will help mulch it together and liquefy it.
You can also simply buy organic juice and add a scoop of pure green powder. Two of our favorites are: Essential Greens or Phion Green.
Yes, this is the way I will now start my day—everyday. Hey, if Heidi has time to juice, so do I!
