Chill Out With Summer Cooling Foods
Melissa Williams, RYT, Co-Owner of the Yoga Junction
As I write this, it is 100 degrees outside and I live in the mountains outside of usually temparate Boulder!
From the looks of it, this is turning out to be a consistently super hot summer. A real sizzler!
The kind of summer when a popsicle for dinner sounds totally reasonable. But according to Ayurveda, ice-cold food isn’t the best choice for hot weather.
Summer, the season of pitta, or fire, needs to be balanced with cooling and very water-based foods and activities that go beyond the popsicles eaten poolside.
The problem with ice cold foods, as well as just ice water, is that it puts a damper on your digestive system, making it more difficult to digest the foods you do eat—leaving you feeling bloated at best and stanating the process.
The flavors you want to look for in the summer are sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes and ALWAYS start your day warm with lemon water. Believe it or not lemons are very alkaline.
So the salty potato chips at the BBQ are clearly not the best choice for Pitta Summer!
Ready to get started? You've got to whip up these awesome cooling Summer beverages and recipes to take the heat out of the day. And if you don’t have time to make a drink, grab some cold, but not ice-cold, coconut water, which will help you feel refreshed and energized.
Speaking of smooth, cooling foods, get a load of the below melange of honey, ginger & lime yogurt in the form of a fruit kabob...FUN Summer project!
