Spa of the Centuries

Spa of the CenturiesAlthough for most of us history generally exists only in long forgotten textbooks, the 19th century lives and breathes in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia.

Book a room at the elegant Williamsburg Inn, which provides luxurious rooms and superb dining options. For those who appreciate a dose of pampering, the 20,000-square-foot Spa of Colonial Williamsburg delivers.

With signature treatments developed by spa consultant Sylvia Sepielli, the spa offers treatments inspired by traditional American and Native American healing rituals from the 1600s through today.

From hot stones to herbs, hydrotherapy to high-tech skincare these experiences highlight the history and evolution of wellness in America. For example, the 17th Century Experience replicates a Native American sweat lodge by promoting detoxification through steam and heat. The cleansing treatment begins with an energy clearing, followed by the application of detoxifying oil. Clients are then wrapped in herb-infused linens heated with hot stones. After a shower, the treatment concludes with a hot stone massage with oil infused with lavender, cypress, juniper, and rosemary.

In a place where horse-drawn carriages are still the norm, it seems fitting to honor the simplicity of heat and herbs right alongside Vichy showers and ultrasonic exfoliation. Indeed, each is effective in its own right. And this is just the point at The Spa of Colonial Williamsburg. After all, a town that lives largely in the 1800s must believe that history, even the history of wellness, remains relevant today.
