Grace in the garden
– Debra Bokur
As spring blossoms, trees bud, and the first flowers blush, enrich your yoga and tai chi practice by taking it into the great outdoors – or at least to a nearby garden. In Huntsville, Alabama, yoga and tai chi classes are offered on the sweetly scented grass in front of the Teledyne Terrace, or in the shelter of the Grisham Pavilion should spring rains descend. “The natural beauty of the Huntsville Botanical Gardens far exceeds any meditative environment synthetically created within the myriad of modern studios,” says instructor and clinical exercise specialist Jon Lolley. “Through practicing these two ancient arts in the same organic setting from which they were created, we no longer feel separate from nature. The group connection within this exquisite oasis creates a sense of place and belonging that transcends social, political, and religious boundaries. Within the gentle confines of cedar trees, dogwood flowers, and blue sky, each participant joins in peace, unified through a common goal of healing.” Check with your local parks and recreation office to find a garden tai chi or yoga class nearby. Better yet, start one of your own. For more information about the Huntsville program, call (256) 830-4447 or visit www.hsvbg.org
