(Sounds True, January 2010)
The concept of “mind over matter” is nothing new, and there’s a lot of research to support the power and positive effects of visualization, optimistic thought, and simply willing ourselves into specific action. In this two-CD set, Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founding director of the Stress Reduction Clinic and Center for Mindfulness Medicine, Health Care, and Society at the University of Massachusetts Medical School, leads listeners through meditation sessions designed to help people change their very relationship with chronic pain. Kabat-Zinn teaches that by cultivating mindfulness, it’s possible to live with suffering in a productive and life-affirming way. He teaches breathing techniques, ways to adjust our attitude toward pain, and how to learn from pain’s lessons. Kabat-Zinn is also the author of numerous books, including Letting Everything Become Your Teacher: One Hundred Lessons in Mindfulness (Delta, 2009), Full Catastrophe Living: Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain and Illness (Delta, 1990), and Wherever You Go, There You Are (Hyperion, 2005).
