Spa Etiquette
Dear Tanya, I’ve been recently ill with an acute infection, and my neck and shoulders are tight from fever and bed rest. I’m anxious for a massage but don’t want to risk relapse. Is any bodywork suitable at this point?
If the infection has subsided and you are no longer taking pain medication or heavy prescriptive drugs, then your best bet is to consult with a therapist certified in Manual Lymph Drainage. MLD works the body’s illness-fighting arsenal, the lymph system, helping boost the flow of lymph (which, unlike blood, does not self pump) and aids the body in processing and eliminating any residuals from the illness and from medications. Using light rhythmic strokes, this form of massage is very relaxing and soothing, but it can also be a powerful aid in your return to wellness. MLD is also a great immune-booster and can help keep your lymph system functioning optimally, so it’s worthwhile to consider getting regular treatments, even after your health has fully returned.
