Green smoothies sure do get a lot of hype these days. Detox, cleanse and green juice seem to be the common day vernacular for health buffs. But, there is some confusion around this feel good drink.

Unless you are trading your sugar loaded colas and lattes for green drinks you are not doing a body good. Drinking green juice without changing your unhealthy habits is like trying to cut calories by ordering a big mac but hold the pickle, it can’t happen.

People often think they are doing a good job by eating well, but forget to look at their unhealthy habits. If you are trying to lose weight or get clear skin, but fail to see your goals come true these tips can help.

Listen to Your Body

Your body is talking to you at all times. “Eat this, don’t eat that”, “I feel tired, I need to rest.” But most of the time we work over eat, eat over it, stress over eat and plain out right ignore it. Listen closely to what your body is trying to tell you. When you listen to it you will return to your natural body weight and healthy glow.

Add More Greens

If you want your green juice or smoothie to be healthy, keep the alkalizing greens dominant (60-80%). Greens shouldn’t ever compromise the taste of your gorgeous drink. Drinking your greens will help improve your digestion as well.

Add romaine and spinach or kale, collard greens, butter/red/green lettuce, fennel, celery, cucumber and herbs (cilantro, mint and parsley — in smaller quantities). If you’re overwhelmed by the taste of bitter greens, add lemon garlic or more romaine or spinach.

Use Low Glycemic Fruit

A spike in blood sugar can send you to the bed for nap time a.s.a.p., avoid afternoon burnout by picking your fruit wisely.

To keep your blood sugar levels balanced, the majority of your fruit you eat should be low GI, with a smaller quantity of medium-labeled fruit. Our favorite choices apples, pears, grapefruit, kiwi, oranges, strawberries and plums, include bananas, mangoes, papaya and pineapple, to name a few.

Be Your Own Health Guru

Remember that each body will react differently to food combinations and health claims. Listen to yourself first. Watch for key symptoms like bloating, gas, or headaches.

Dr. Andrew Thompson, a Dentist in Portland, OR, says that your body is your best teacher. Listen to it for health tips.
