Having helped thousands learn how to breathe, meditate, and practice yoga over the last thirty years, Los Angeles-based Kundalini yoga teacher Gurmukh is renowned for her prenatal yoga classes. With her husband, Gurmukh owns and operates Golden Bridge (www.goldenbridgeyoga.com), a 22,000-square-foot yoga, wellness, performance, and retail space. In this profile, Gurmukh discusses how each of us can bring peace into the world by taking time every day to renew ourselves.
HL&S: Why is it important to take time out for nurturing self-care with yoga during pregnancy and afterwards?
Gurmukh: Motherhood connects a woman to the Divine Mother. Your intuition opens, strengthens. Your sense of living beyond yourself, being able to sacrifice for another life, develops. Motherhood is one of the most profound experiences I have ever had.
HL&S: Can you recommend some yoga for women to help them manage their moods and energies?
Gurmukh: When you’re feeling spacey or PMS is happening, stretch at different times throughout the day. Try uttananasa, or standing forward fold. Stand with feet hip width apart and hinge forward from the waist. Breathe deeply and slowly and exhale. Maybe your hands will touch the floor, maybe not. Feel the stretch in the hamstrings, calves, and in your mind.
