I’m greeted with a cool glass of iced citrus water as I step into Moana Lani Spa at the Moana Surfrider in Waikiki. A unique healing spot blessed by its roots and grounded in history whose home is the First Lady of Waikiki. The first hotel in Waikiki, tradition is in the details here, and each of those details supports healing at the Moana Lani Spa, a Westin Resort & Spa. This sanctuary is nestled above a natural healing spring, ‘Apuakehau, which flows from Maoa Valley down to the breathtaking ocean front.

This spring that once gave life to Waikiki Beach now gives life to this spa. The spa’s lounge opens up to the famous Waikiki Beach, where families play ball and build sand castles. I sat comfortably in my luxurious robe munching on local nuts, and drinking passion tea as I waited to begin my treatment.

Moana Lani Spa has been ranked one of the Top 100 Spas by Spas of America, and was named the Readers Choice for Best Spa by Honolulu Magazine and America’s 2012 Top 100 Spas By spAWARDS. This is Waikiki’s first and only beach front spa, and it opened its doors in October 2008. The fresh new state-of-the-art spa features 14 treatment rooms, including two couple’s massage rooms, and a 1,400 square foot WestinWORKOUT® fitness facility. The spa features an enticing menu of treatments and services designed to pamper and invigorate the weariest of travelers.

This is a tranquil place where Hawaiian healing traditions and innovative spa rituals inspire the spirit and become one. As I was called for my treatment, and had to leave the beautiful waiting area, I realized that my eyes would forever be tattooed with the gorgeous view.

I prepared for the Moana signature treatment, Na Mele. I was led into the ocean front treatment room, where I could hear the lapping of ocean waves and people playing on the beach. My therapist shut the oversized wood panels and the room became more sound proof. He switched on a CD of local music, considered an Hawaiian Lullaby.

This massage utilizes the traditional techniques of lomi plus hand and uses the selected sounds of Hawai’i to create a hypnotic blend of touch and sound. This treatment serenaded me into a trance of relaxation. I certainly left feeling better than when I came in. The music in this treatment is also a gift to guests to take home as part of their “Moana Memories.”
