By the Sea

My last destination is the stunning St. David’s Hotel & Spa, situated in the busy seaside quay area of Cardiff. After a spa treatment and Cold Marine Facial, I immerse myself in the warm marine mineral pools, spending long minutes positioning my shoulders beneath one of the waterfall elements in the main pool. It’s instant massage therapy, and removes every last vestige of the stiffness I’ve collected from the long coastal drive. The spa pools are all undulating blues and sea greens, with tiled ceilings that suggest rolling waves.

Afterwards, I retreat to the peaceful spa lounge. On the far side of the floor-to-ceiling glass windows several hundred yards from where I rest, sailboats and swans vie for passage along the inlet. The corner of the hotel appears to rise directly from the sea, and it’s a toss-up as to the best angle and view. My room on the fifth floor has a wavy steel deck running the length of the bedroom-sitting area, and though I’ve grown quite fond of the country manor houses where I’ve slept over the past week, St. David’s modern wood and glass architecture seems a perfect fit for Wales’ very modern capital city.
