Over the last few months there have been a lot of protests about the growing problem of GMO seeds and labeling laws. But do you know what’s really going on? Here are four things we think you should know.

1. We’re not sure about the safety of GMOs. Most foods on your supermarket shelves are safe, right? Unfortunately, the idea of innocent until proven guilty is also currently accepted as an okay method for evaluating the foods we put into our bodies. GMO crop studies haven’t been conducted by non-biased groups. There are no long-term studies investigating the process. Some suggest that genetically altered foods, however, may increase the incidence and severity of food allergies.

2. When we mess with nature, nature messes with us. Just like the overuse of antibiotics has created antibiotic resistant bacteria, the use of pesticides has created superbugs that then require even more pesticide use.

3. There are only a few major companies that control most of the seeds in the U.S. These same companies also create the pesticides used on the seeds. They are making money and controlling our food supply.

4. The use of GMOs threatens our entire food supply. GMO seeds spread easily, and farmers are getting lured into trying them out. The proliferation of GMO seeds has led to a decrease in heirloom and heritage seeds; foods that have been on our plates for generations.

HOW CAN YOU AVOID GMOS?

1. Buy local from an organic farm.

2. Look for No-GMO certifications.

3. Avoid processed foods. Any processed food can contain GMOs (unless organic). The best thing to do for your health is to avoid processed foods altogether.
