Many people try to take care of their body by eating healthier foods and exercising. But being healthy isn’t just about your habits.
The type of lifestyle and behavior you lead can affect many areas of your life, not just your physical health but your emotional health as well. The way you feel about yourself is important. These mindful living tips can help you feel more fulfilled and help you to put your best face forward.
1. Stop saying “You always…” or “You never…”
The situation: Your husband leaves his dirty dinner dish in the sink. Again. And again. You lash out saying ‘you always …”
Why it’s unhealthy: This blanket approach has the potential to snowball out of control, so you suddenly find yourself fighting and screaming about big issues like money or parenting instead of the pile of plates, explains Marianne Gillow, PhD, a psychiatrist in private practice in New York City.
Next time, say: “I have a problem with…” Describe the bothersome behavior in a precise way, which allows you to get to the nuance of the fight, and settle it quickly. “If you’re going to fight with a loved one, it’s best to keep it as specific as possible,” Gillow says.
2. Stop Sitting
Three years ago, Women’s Health was among the first to expose sitting disease. The gist: Too much inactivity can leave you prone to such deadly ailments as heart disease and obesity. The advice: Get moving. But Americans haven’t budged much. The only real momentum has been in the lab, where research has found that inactivity can also damage your mind, sleep cycle, and organs. It could even shorten your life: Women who sit for more than six hours a day have a roughly 40 percent higher risk of dying from any cause, regardless of their fitness level, versus those who sit for fewer than three hours.
3. Stop Stymieing Your Creativity
Expressing yourself creatively reduces the risk of disease and illness while simultaneously strengthening your health and wellness, says our friends at Buffer.com. For example, this study from the Harvard School of Public Health revealed that art helps to reduce stress and anxiety, increase positive emotions, and reduce the likelihood of depression, along with many other benefits.
Every single one of us is incredibly creative, even if some people might have told us otherwise. It’s especially important to ignore the old “Left Brain, Right Brain” myth, stating that if you don’t use one side enough, you just aren’t creative:
4.) Stop Staying Where You Are Unhappy
Huffington Post says whether this be in a relationship, a job or some other situation, if you are unhappy either sort out the problem and make it better, or accept it and change your attitude, or GET OUT. Making change in your life is in your control and it is time to stop staying where you are miserable. Life is short, grab it with both hands. If you are unable to change the situation, instead change your attitude, your approach to every day and some of the conditions of the situation.
The best time to make a change is right NOW — take the leap.
