Stuffed up and the air is to blame? Here are our favorite remedies for allergies and sinus problems.

1. Neti Pot- You probably saw this one coming, but did you know that researchers say that regular and appropriate use of a saline wash via the neti can decrease congestion and pain as much as nasal sprays and possibly even antibiotics? Flush two times a day, and be sure to read directions for ratio of salt and water. For quality, ceramic Neti Pots go to Himalayan Institute, creators of the original Neti Pot.

2. Stinging Nettle- While stinging nettle by itself can cause a reaction, when taken in select doses it can actually help inhibit the release of histamines the culprit behind closed nasal passages and head pressure.

3. Ginger- Ginger increases circulation and is an anti-inflammatory, according to Brigitte Mars in her book, “The Country Almanac of Home Remedies”. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties it can decrease swelling in the respiratory passages. She recommends taking it in tea, tincture or capsule form 3 times a day.

From Brigitte Mars’ Book, The Country Almanac of Home Remedies (Fair Winds Press, 2011); for sinus pressure, Mars recommends using a ginger compress.

First make a tea of fresh chopped ginger root, simmered for 20 minutes. Soak a couple of washcloths in the comfortably hot tea, wring, and apply gently over the afflicted sinus areas. Reapply three or four times daily as needed.
