an exercise in appreciation

Compliments of Kathlyn Hendricks, PhD

First, take two or three relaxed breaths. Then, change your position or posture, which helps shift your perspective. Next, think of something you genuinely appreciate about your partner. This could be something he or she does daily, an aspect of his or her personality, or something that he or she is doing right now. Finally, look over at your partner and say something you really mean. Start with, “I appreciate…” Again, it doesn’t have to be profound. I appreciate you driving. I appreciate you making coffee every morning. I appreciate you picking up the kids. Hendricks says, “Appreciations fill the reservoir of good feeling. Both people benefit because they feel good to give and receive.”
