Described as ‘the Galapagos of Yoga’ by one reviewer because of its synthesis of various styles and schools, Tripsichore (pronounced trip-sic-OR-ee) is the fusion of yoga and performance art. Founder, dancer, and yogi Edward Clark recently visited Asheville Yoga Center for a demonstration and workshop in honor of the studio’s 10th anniversary.

A striking individual with a dancer’s physique, Clark mesmerized the crowd with yoga-based Cirque du Soleil-inspired moves. Interspersed with philosophical dialogue about the ephemeral nature of the physical body, Clark addressed the significance of appropriate thought and action. The troupe has been developing asana-based dance performances for fourteen years, drawing from a background in punk ballet as well as neo-classical and modern dance. The performance sequences combine traditional asanas with graceful and awe-inspiring variations, such as extended headstands, handstands, and arm balances in an otherwise recognizable sun salutation.
