Oil As Your Daily Moisturizer

Continued from our Retreat & Renew Daily Tip.

Before you write off body oil as a messy, expensive option, consider that natural oils can be even more moisturizing than your regular body lotion that sink right into skin, mess-free.

During the winter, skin will drink it up! If you are extra-dry, try layering body oil under lotion for a locked-in layer of moisture. To start with the body oil basics, consider buying unrefined coconut oil from the grocery store (about $10) and applying it to skin as you would a lotion. This natural product has been prized by islanders for years, and it continues to be one of the most-used beauty ingredients. In cooler temperatures, coconut oil will actually become solid, but you’ll find that it will melt instantly into skin- and you’ll love the results.

Another option? Pure jojoba oil mimics skin’s natural sebum. And another skin-friendly choice is olive oil, which you can also purchase from the grocery store as an unrefined oil, or find in a solid balm. If you’re prone to redness, look for body oil that contains sweet almond oil, a lightweight oil that calms dry or itchy skin.

Most importantly, skip the conventional moisturizers that contain petroleum, synthetic fragrance, parabens and even alcohol. Your skin will thank you and the results will speak for themselves all season long.  Click here for a complete guide on non-toxic skin care.
