The pioneering wellness spa Sundara Inn & Spa in Wisconsin Dells, Wis., has had much to celebrate in 2024.
There was the #1 Domestic Destination Spa ranking in Travel + Leisure magazine’s “World’s Best Awards,” the #2 spot in USA Today’s “Readers’ Choice” for spa resorts, an award from Oprah Daily’s inaugural “Best Hotels and Wellness Resorts” O-Wards, and a Top 20 ranking among destination spas in the U.S. as voted on in the annual Readers’ Choice Awards from Condé Nast Traveler magazine.
Yet it may be this popular destination spa saved the best for last. For the first time in its 21-year history, Sundara earned national “Top Workplaces” recognition as nominated by employees and based on employee feedback in the industry benchmark workplace survey administered by Energage, known for helping companies gain recognition for a people-first approach to culture.
Sundara was honored in the Culture Excellence category for companies with 150-499 employees, with special accolades for Employee Well-being, Employee Professional Development, Employee Appreciation, and as a Woman-Led Business.
“As our mission is centered on wellness in all we do, this naturally includes respect, care, and support for our team members,” said Alyssa Mullin, Sundara’s general manager. “It’s so gratifying and energizing to know our employees feel their work is meaningful and appreciated.”
Mullin shared that Sundara has expanded the wellness programming for staff by offering employees free participation in the resort’s yoga, meditation, journaling, and sound bathing classes along with full use of the fitness center, salt therapy room, the new Wellsystem Wave touch-free massage, the onsite hiking trails, and the many water features including indoor and outdoor pools.
Additionally, employees receive discounts on overnight accommodations so they can enjoy a restful retreat of their own, along with discounts on spa treatments, products, and cuisine too.
“It’s vital to nurture a culture of well-being for our team members who work so diligently to care for our guests,” said Mullin.
Since opening in 2003, wellness seekers, especially those from Chicago, the Twin Cities and Wisconsin, have deemed Sundara their favorite destination spa for an array of reasons, starting with its peaceful location in an 80-acre fragrant pine forest on the scenic outskirts of the popular resort community of Wisconsin Dells.
Also notable is the fact that it has always been adult-only for tranquility and electronics-free in the common areas for a much-needed digital detox in today’s always-on world. The daily schedule of wellness activities included with a visit allows guests to be as active or relaxed as they like.
Water amenities, including outdoor pools heated year-round, indoor pools with waterfalls, and an indoor Signature Purifying Bath Ritual with hot and cool plunge pools, help define the experience.
The restaurant features farm-to-table offerings and highlights ingredients sourced from Sundara’s own rooftop greenhouse. Sundara has 44 guest units, some with their own private patio with fireplace and heated soak.
In the spa, there are 27 treatment rooms including four Spa Together rooms and quiet relaxation areas. Fitness and yoga studios, a boutique showcasing Sundara’s signature line of products, and flexible meeting spaces for small group gatherings complete the property.
Along with attracting loyal visitors, Mullin pointed out that Sundara’s work culture attracts employees from across the world and leads to long tenures. “High staff retention as we have at Sundara is uncommon in the competitive spa wellness industry,” she remarked, adding, “and it is a significant benefit for our guests.”
