Heather Lee Battey, Founder, Designer, and President of Spiritual Fitness Wear (SFW)
Heather Lee Battey has had a long career in health and fitness. In addition to being a personal trainer, Battey has carried such titles as Ms. Fitness Western States and Women of Wrestling World Champion. Battey, however, wanted to make a more lasting contribution to women’s health. After overcoming anxiety and panic disorders, Battey was determined to create a women’s clothing line that reinforced what had helped her most “positive affirmations. Her positive affirmation-infused apparel, Spiritual Fitness Wear, aims to provide women with comfortable clothing that makes them feel good about themselves. Here, Battey discusses her inspiration behind Spiritual Fitness Wear.
HL&S: What inspired you to start Spiritual Fitness Wear?
Battey: After years of therapy for my anxiety and panic, I began learning about the benefits of positive self-talk and self-love. I started to repeat positive affirmations daily and slowly learned to change my inner dialogue to a much more positive one. My boyfriend (now husband) and I took a trip to Santa Barbara for a weekend to relax. We must have seen at least 10-15 ladies wearing negative t-shirts such as ‘Bitch’, ‘I hate men’, ‘Attitude’, etc. Here I was trying so hard to heal myself with positive thoughts and everywhere we looked was negative. I decided it was time for a company to write only positive messages on their clothing!
HL&S: How do you hope to inspire others with your line?
Battey: Each article of clothing that comes from Spiritual Fitness and our Happy Headquarters is meant to inspire others to believe in themselves and not judge themselves or others. Everyone has things they go through in life. My line is designed to encourage you through all the tough times, [and to]laugh more, love more, live more, and be fearless. The idea is that whatever you are wearing has a message. You repeat that message out into the universe like a daily affirmation and it comes back to you; while you wear the clothing, the positive message also resonates into you.
HL&S: Other than on your clothing line, do you use positive affirmations in your day-to-day life?
Battey: Absolutely! When I run, I repeat, ‘calm & relax’; while I am working, I remind myself to ‘breathe’ and take things slow.
HL&S: Just Be. What do you hope people will feel or learn from this statement?
Battey: When my therapist first told me to just be, I told him, ‘I can’t!’ I couldn’t sit still, and I was constantly running from my inner thoughts of not being good enough. I felt I should always be doing something; I felt I always should be excelling, proving things, etc. In my mind, I was never good enough. Just be who you are, just be in the moment, just be now, just be happy, just be calm, just be centered, just be loveable, just be human, etc. It is funny because no one ever says ‘Just be what?’ People either get it or they don’t. I hope everyone will get it someday. It is a great feeling to finally love who you are, and Just Be!
HL&S: How are you giving back to the community?
Battey: We work with many charities such as Women for Women International, the Libby Ross Breast Cancer Foundation, Toys for Tots, Girls Inc., and Freedom from Fear. We have also adopted a little girl, Likabelo, in Africa through World Vision that we send a percentage of our profits to each month to help her and her family. Each article of clothing that is not sellable goes directly to the Salvation Army, or abused women and children charities around the world. What good is positive clothing if those who need it most do not receive it?
