Instead of dozing by the fireside all winter, consider learning a fun new way to burn calories and boost your health. On January 6, 100 locations across the country will celebrate Winter Trails Day, offering free instruction (and the use of gear) to participants interested in learning about the health and fitness benefits of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. “During the cold months, we slow down and hibernate, adding pounds to the waistline. Winter sports burn about 500 calories per hour”, says David Ingemie, president of SnowSports Industries America. “With advances in gear and warm, insulating apparel, it’s even easier to learn a new snow sport that creates lifelong skills and boosts confidence.” Last year, 12,000 participants joined in Winter Trails Day, gaining new skills and expending six million calories in the process.
