Mangosteen (no relation to the mango) is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia where it has been used in folk medicine for centuries.
It’s about the size of a tangerine with a dark purple rind encasing a snow-white fruit, the mangosteen is so revered in the Orient it’s known as the “Queen of Fruits.” While its healing properties and delightful taste are no mystery in the East, the mangosteen is far less known in the West.
Recently, this exotic fruit has been praised for its naturally occurring compounds, the most prominent being xanthones, that may have medicinal properties. Found primarily in the rind (or pericarp) of the fruit, xanthones are chemical substances that may possess potent antioxidative properties including anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-histamine activities.
Researchers studied mangosteen juice to see if it could lower signs of inflammation in obese volunteers. An article in “Nutrition Journal” reported that volunteers who drank mangosteen juice twice daily showed a significant reduction in inflammatory markers in their bloodstream, while markers for inflammation in a control group that received a different juice concoction didn’t change.
Other commonly reported benefits of consuming mangosteen juice include increased energy, curing of acne, gum disease, cataracts, helps shield the brain from toxic substances that cause Alzheimer’s disease, and the list goes on.

Ready to give this juice a try
You need to make sure that the juice contains the pulp of the fruit, the seeds, and the most importantly, the rind (might also be labeled as pericarp). Since the rind has many of the medicinal properties, look for juices that are made with this part of the fruit as well.
The label should say something like MADE FROM WHOLE FRUIT. The serving size gets smaller, effectively making any 100% whole mangosteen juice “biggest bang for the buck”.
Proprietary blends can contain questionable amounts of mangosteen unless they state the percentage of the fruit as an ingredient. By adding in other ingredients and flavors, they dilute many of the nutrients that consumers expect from high-quality mangosteen juice.
