Mayo Clinic Women’s Healthsource reports more doctors recommending meditation as a way to relieve stress and reduce the risk of heart disease. That’s no surprise to Janet Chase, who teaches So-Hum meditation at Mii amo in Sedona, Arizona. From Indian Vedic tradition, So-Hum is an uncomplicated technique that purifies the body and releases stress. Here, Janet offers a ‘take-home’ lesson. Try it twice a day, fifteen minutes a session.
1. ‘So’ is the sound of breath inhaled. It also symbolizes the divine. Think ‘So’ as you inhale, taking in divinity.
2. ‘Hum’ is the sound of breath exhaled. It also symbolizes the ego. Think ‘Hum’ as you exhale, pushing out ego.
3. Sit comfortably in a place with no distractions. Inhale (So) and exhale (Hum), smoothly and effortlessly.
4. As your body relaxes, your mind releases thoughts. When you notice them, remind yourself to concentrate on the So-Hum and take another dive into the meditation.
