Spa Through the Ages
By Kimberly Wilson
No matter what your age or skin type, there are spa treatments and skincare products that can help your skin’s inner beauty radiate.
Teens
Unfortunately for teens, their skin types tend to be as active as their lifestyles. Today’s teens, however, are also learning about spa treatments and skincare lines that they can rely on as they shape their own image and express their individuality. Spa treatments like massage, facials, and even “how to” make-up lessons can help boost self-confidence, enable teens to feel more comfortable with their skin, and raise awareness about their muscles and body. Teens should look for special treatments like the Clarifying Enzyme Acne Facial, offered at Murad Medical Spa in El Segundo, California, which is designed to deal with oily skin, breakouts, and acne. Using enzymes to clear congested pores is the treatment du jour at Kiva, a hip downtown spa in Chicago that offers Clear Joy, a facial designed to calm acne-prone skin and tone down redness. Also in Chicago, the Kaya Day Spa offers a treatment called Teen Purity, a facial that begins with a one-on-one lesson covering skincare basics with one of Kaya’s estheticians. While the teen years may be marked by acne, breakouts, and oily skin, these unwelcome signs of youth also present an opportunity to learn about one’s skin and how choosing effective products and spa treatments now can make a world of difference as you age.
Many spas offer make-up application lessons with natural makeup lines. Aveda, for example, offers special appointments for teens who are curious about makeup, but unsure how to apply it. Sweet sixteen parties centered on make-up application lessons are available at Kokoro Spa in Georgetown, Connecticut, using the mineral makeup line from Jane Iredale.
Recommended products: At home, avoid harsh cleansers that can dry out the skin and try gentle products that help skin deal with excess oil naturally. Alba Botanica makes several enzyme-based products to help clear clogged pores. Try their Sea Algae Enzyme Facial Scrub, Pineapple Enzyme Facial Cleanser or the Papaya Enzyme Facial Mask. For the body, try Alba’s Papaya Mango Exfoliating Body Wash. Murad offers an Acne Complex Starter Kit that can jumpstart home skincare, and Juice Beauty, an organic face care line, makes a Blemish Clearing Serum that can be used all-over or as a spot treatment.
Twenties
There’s no doubt about it – the twenties are a tough time for your skin. Late nights, school, hormones, and a lifestyle free of strict regimens and habits can wreak havoc on young skin. It is often during their twenties that young women first discover the benefits of a professional facial, try a new skincare program, or learn about holistic health and nutrition. Preventative skincare and the establishment of good lifestyle habits in your twenties can help skin age gracefully. “Getting consistent with a good home routine is really beneficial,” says Caitlin Conn, lead esthetician at Exhale’s Central South location in New York City. “Wash gently, and avoid overzealous scrubbing and [the]harsh cleansers that you were using during your teens.” Obtaining expert advice from an esthetician about preventative skincare is essential, and the professional skincare products offered at spas often have the best quality ingredients for young skin – like high SPF and antioxidants. “The twenties are a great time to start using sun protection,” says Lisa Polley, esthetician and corporate representative at Murad. “Ideally, the younger the better. It is never too early, and you’ll have a much better result in your thirties.”
By offering nutrition classes, stress reduction techniques, and preventative skincare treatments, spas can serve young clients by dealing with underlying issues such as poor nutrition, damaging lifestyle choices, or excessive sun exposure. For instance, Exhale, a company of seven spas across the country, offers yoga, bodywork, and wellness classes in addition to skincare treatments. Other spas, like Body of Truth in Kingston, New York, have naturopathic doctors and nutritionists available on site for client consultations.
Try full-body treatments focused on restoring balance to the roller-coaster lifestyle of the twenties, like the Mediterranean Taste of Traditions treatment offered at several Mandarin Oriental Spa locations. According to group spa director Ingo Schweder, this treatment is good for clients in their twenties, “due to the releasing and restorative qualities of the massage,” he says, “this treatment helps release emotional stress and is essential in this period of life, which can be accompanied by many ups and downs.”
Recommended products: To protect twenty-something skin, try the organic Juice Beauty Moisturizer with SPF 30, the highly-absorbent Aroma Sun Protective Hydrating Sun Milk SPF 15 from Decleor, or Murad’s oil-free Energizing Pomegranate Moisturizer with SPF 15. For a gentle scrub, try Astara’s Daily Refining Scrub, and for time-starved twenty-something’s who need a quick result before a date or special occasion, try Zia Natural Skincare’s 15 Minute Face Lift, an at-home facial designed to make skin glow in a snap.
Thirties
Ah, the thirties. The decade of your life when the sun-soaked, carefree lifestyle of your teens and twenties can catch up to you. Fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage start to appear, and spa treatments and home care regimens to treat any existing sun damage will have the added benefit of helping to prevent further lines.
“Women in their thirties are more conscientious than ever about the aging process, but they can also be dealing with hormonal issues due to birth control pills or pregnancy,” says Jill Price Marshall, spokesperson for Dr. Hauschka. For women struggling with combination skin, Price Marshall recommends a gentle, daily cleansing regimen and a consultation with a Dr. Hauschka esthetician for customized treatments. Dr. Hauschka’s classic spa facial treatment takes nearly two hours and relies on natural, plant-based extracts to pamper and soothe your skin.
The thirties are also a great time to look below the skin’s surface at sun damage and overall skin health. Klinger Advanced Aesthetics Medical Spa in Chevy Chase, Maryland, offers a 360-degree diagnostic system to test your skin’s elasticity, hydration, and UV damage. The results, clearly displayed in digital photos, take an unflinching look at your skin that Klinger estheticians use to customize facial treatments. Knowledge is power, and by making sun damage visible to clients, spas provide a reality-check for thirty-something clients who are concerned about early aging. “As your cellular renewal process slows down, you need to give a little more assistance to the skin,” advises Conn. Assistance, Conn suggests, should come in the form of a non – abrasive exfoliant, like acids and enzymes. She recommends that spa clients in their thirties seek treatments that use a different exfoliant than they currently use at home. Look for treatments that gently exfoliate, like the Alpha Vital Facial at Akari Day Spa in Portland, Maine, that uses AHA and BHA to help treat sun damage, acne scars, and fine lines.
Recommended Products: At home, treat yourself to the Dr. Hauschka home regimen, which consists of using a cleansing cream, made with sweet almond meal, followed by a facial toner and daily moisturizer. To treat sun damage or adult acne, try Zia Natural Skincare’s Pumpkin Exfoliating Mask, a treatment loaded with beta-carotene to help fight free-radical damage while calming and balancing skin. Other beneficial products include toners and cleansers that contain alpha-hydroxy acids. Try the Sleeping Peel Resurfacing Gel, a toner made by Bliss that contains exfoliating acids as well as vitamins A and C, DDF Glycolic Exfoliating Wash, containing glycolic acids to chase away dead skin cells, or Glycolic Acid 10% Hydrating Gel from Peter Thomas Roth.
