Ann Dyer, a Bay Area yoga instructor and jazz recording artist, recently noticed that her students were showing up to class more exhausted than ever. Many complained of problems sleeping, others were wound up, stressed out, and overworked. They told Dyer they’d pass out at night only to wake up hours later consumed by anxious thoughts and worries. Dyer wondered what advice she could offer her students as an alternative to the ever more popular prescription sleeping pills.
Establishing a before bed ritual, according to medical experts, is one natural way to prevent insomnia and ensure a peaceful night’s sleep. With this knowledge in mind, Dyer decided to put her years of yoga training and musical experience to work, and created a restorative yoga-infused pre-bed ritual for those of us who need some help traveling to dreamland. Z Yoga, the yoga sleep ritual, is a DVD/CD guidebook that combines gentle yoga movement, Indian mantra music, and guided relaxation. ‘Lullaby’ is a thirty-minute audio CD of guided relaxation, perfect for before bed. Dyer’s essential message, “that between work and sleep must come rest and relaxation” is a most necessary and pleasurable prescription.
