I didn’t have to trek across the globe to experience an authentic Moroccan indulgence so divine it brought tears of joy to my eyes, but the Hammam Detoxifying Body Treatment would have been worth every step of the journey. “Hammam” is the Arabic word used to define “public bathhouses,” but I was the sole focus of this 90-minute signature treatment at the Estrella Spa in Palm Springs, California. I reclined onto a cushioned table in a dimly lit room and mint tea mist was sprayed above me. My skin was vigorously exfoliated with a lemon, coffee blossom, and olive stone scrub, the scents of which seduced me into deep relaxation and euphoria. Next, I was painted with jasmine rose clay and loosely wrapped while the clay detoxified my skin. Then came the crowning moment, as warm cardamom and amber oil were poured onto my scalp and I was given a head and shoulder massage. Light vichy showers washed away the clay and the treatment ended with a full body massage with a tangerine, fig butter creme.
