A Paired Down HolidayA Paired Down Holiday

From the parties to the gifts, the d©cor to the cards, the holiday season can sometimes feel a little less than joyful, which obviously misses the point. This year, aim to have a less stressed, less booked, and less clutter-filled holiday with these simple tips:

  1. Exchange non-gifts. Instead of giving gifts to your friends, suggest a book or cookie swap. Both are equally sweet and won’t leave you feeling broke.
  2. Suggest time-oriented gifts. For my children this year, we are asking for the gift of time and activities. But there’s no reason this can’t extend to adults, too. Your mom loves the theatre, why not take her to a show? I’m sure she’ll enjoy the experience more than another scarf to clutter her shelves.
  3. Choose for longevity. Instead of buying new d©cor every year for the holiday, look for d©cor that has some longevity and perhaps multiple uses. A pretty wreath that can be stored year-to-year, or maybe a new set of candlesticks can add a lot of warmth to your home. And while you’re at it, go through ornaments, candles, etc. and donate anything you don’t love, and throw away anything you don’t use.
  4. Try to establish rules. Gifts are nice to give when they have meaning and when they give both the recipient and the giver happiness. It isn’t as much fun to give when it feels mandatory. If you feel your gift list is too long, try doing an exchange. It is fun to shop for one person and give it meaning, especially when they don’t know who the gift is going to be coming from.
  5. Clear out. If you know you’ve got some pretty good stuff on your wish lists, make room in advance. It will not only give you more room physically for new, needed items, but it will also give you the opportunity to mentally clear out space for the upcoming holiday season.
  6. Find a very special picture and frame it, it’s a gift that lasts forever and means the most.
