Chanting for Personal and World Peace

World Peace

There is no way to peace.

Peace is the way.

Mahatma Gandhi

It would do us all well to remember Gandhi’s words during the holidays, when social commitments and family obligations agitate our calendars and emotions. But the fact is, “You can make peace your way, every day, especially if you practice chanting”, says yoga teacher Kristin Campbell, owner and director of Neoalpine Yoga in Whistler, British Columbia. “If you chant for inner peace, you will help manifest world peace”, says Campbell. “Chanting makes your body and mind resonate with peaceful sounds and emotions. Chanting positively changes the energy that you give to the world.”

But what exactly is chanting? Is it easy to learn? And how does it help us and the world? According to Gary Margolin, a Santa Monica, California, yoga teacher, “Chanting is the language for communicating with the powers of the universe, whether we are [referring to]God or Gods, spirits, angels, or anything else. Chanting sends our message through sound vibrations out into the universe”, says Margolin, who is the owner of Home, Simply Yoga, Southern California’s only 100 percent environmentally sustainable yoga studio. “As we chant, we open our mouths and our hearts and humbly ask for the help we seek”, Margolin continues. “Chanting by repeating a peaceful mantra or saying [one]inside our own heads also has benefits. Besides just sitting and chanting, one might repeat the mantra before any situation that requires good judgment or decisions.”

To fill your being with peace and share it with others, Campbell suggests chanting the ancient Sanskrit word for peace, shanti, which is pronounced, “shahn-tee.” “Shanti means peace and protection from trouble”, Campbell explains. “Chant it out loud three times in the morning when you wake up, say it in the shower, chant it silently while dealing with work conflicts or commuting. The point is to keep invoking shanti and spreading shanti throughout your day.”

Ria Ray, a Santa Monica, California, healer and business consultant who specializes in counseling individuals and corporations on creating peace, suggests a more contemporary chant. “Try repeating ‘Self-love is global peace’ out loud upon waking, while working, and especially in moments of stress”, Ray says. “People tell me this chant helps stabilize themselves [to]behave more calmly.”

Margolin recommends the Gyatri mantra because it is believed that chanting it and firmly establishing it in your mind will fill your life with happiness. The translation is: “O Divine mother, our hearts are filled with darkness. Please make this darkness distant from us and promote illuminations within us.”

Here is the Sanskrit chant:

Om

Bhuh Bhuvah Svah

Tat Savitur Varenyam

Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi

Dhiyo Yo nah Prachodayat

And here’s to peace on earth.
