Cooling Postures for the Summer Heat

Whether you’re hot from the summer warmth, or you’re hot from your body’s own internal thermometer (perimenopause anyone?), sometimes its better to cool down.

Supta Baddha Konasana – Reclining Bound Angle
This is perhaps one of the best poses for women. It increases blood flow to the vital organs, relaxes the belly and diaphragm and allows the body to rest. Recline on your back and bring the soles of your feet together. If your hips are tight, prop a blanket underneath each knee. Stay here for 5 minutes.

Supported Shoulderstand – Inversions, including shoulderstand are wonderful postures for restoring bloodflow and energy to the heart and vital organs. However, when you’re looking for a cooling practice you want to avoid invigorating postures, including full handstand, shoulderstand, and headstand. To come into supported shoulderstand, set up in bridge pose. On an inhale, lift your hips off the floor and place a block underneath your sacrum. Stay here for 3 breaths, then slowly lift your legs- one at a time-into the air. Hold for 1-3 minutes.

Supported Savasana – Take a blanket and roll it up lengthwise, so that it can be underneath the entire length of your spine. Lay down on the blanket so the top of the blanket is at the nape of your neck and the bottom is at your sacrum. Allow your legs and arms to fall to the sides and your eyes to soften. Deepening your breath try and envision the breath moving in as a cool shade of blue. Each inhale the blue moves deeper into your body, perhaps increase in intensity. With each exhale, visualize the heat dissipating from your body. Stay here up to 10 minutes.

Summer comes with a lot of joy, and unfortunately a lot of pain and frustration. From mosquito bites to sunburn, the summer heat certainly has a few downers. But don’t fret, we’ve compiled our favorite tips for thriving through the rest of the summer, and into the fall.

For starters, if your summer has been like ours in the West- hot and dry- allergies seem to be at a peak. Try taking a teaspoon of local honey to alleviate and prevent seasonal allergies. In addition, taking 1000 mg of quercetin through the season can help you stay free of allergy symptoms.
