Suffering from spring allergies or a late winter cold? Try a traditional Ayurvedic nasal cleansing treatment known as the neti pot. The neti pot is a small porcelain or plastic container which, when filled with warm water and a small amount of sea salt, can be used anytime of year to clean and unclog congested nasal passages. Unlike some more costly ayurvedic treatments administered by specialists, the neti pot, available inexpensively in health food stores and online, is used in the privacy of your own home. And it’s a good thing too, because you’ll look a bit silly doing it. After you fill the pot with water and salt, tilt your head to one side over the sink, allowing the saline solution to travel in one nostril and out the other. Empty the contents of the pot, refill, and switch nostrils. For the most benefit, try using the neti pot in the morning, when congestion is at its worst. (Traditionally, neti pot is practiced as part of an early morning self-care routine.) Getting the hang of the neti pot may take some time, but your nasal passages will thank you.
