When I was a teenager struggling big time with acne, I would have thrown up at the idea of washing my face with oil.
What kind of insane nonsense is that? I need chemicals and way more chemicals! And it couldn’t have been more detrimental to both my skin and wallet. Over and over, I tried creams, pills, ointments, and tonics that simply didn’t work, and in fact, irritated the sh*t out my skin. So not only did I have unsightly acne, but with the help of traditional “acne” products, it was also red, flaky, and even more uncomfortable.
At that time, no one I knew used oils for healing. It actually makes a whole lot of sense once you know how oils work and what types of oils are for specific needs. If I had known just how well tea tree and jojoba oil worked, I’d have saved myself a lot of torment, aggravation, and awful skin!
If you’re a skeptic and simply feel it’s a bunch of nonsense, my question to you is this: What do you have to lose?
Nothing, and in fact, you have a lot to gain. As with anything, you have to give it a chance to work, and you likely will need to do a little experimenting to figure out the specific oil, or combination of oils and ratios needed for whatever your particular needs are. Also, the quality of the oil very much matters! You want to work with essential, therapeutic-grade oils. And just so you know, essential oils are not actually oils. They are highly concentrated plant components. Feeling better about it? Good, read on….
- You will spend less money. That got your attention, didn’t it? Since oil is so concentrated, a little goes a very long way. I bought a 15 oz jar of organic unrefined cold-pressed virgin coconut oil eighteen months ago. I use it on my skin every day and just finished up the jar a couple of days ago. Cost: $10.00. By the way, coconut oil is an incredible moisturizer and it has UV radiation blocking properties. Coconut oil has an SPF of 4, which blocks about 75% of UV radiation. This will protect you in the sun for about 45 minutes. To read more about this, read here.
- You will avoid putting harmful chemicals on your skin. Look, we all know that if you can’t pronounce the majority of ingredients listed, and the list runs higher than five, you really need to think more than twice about it. Look for oils that contain one ingredient. You can combine oils with carrier oils (jojoba, coconut, castor, almond, and olive oils are the most commonly used carriers), so the intensity of the essential oil is minimized, ensuring it is effective and not irritating. Carrier oils literally carry the essential oils into your skin and assist them in both their effectiveness and longevity. A great example of how to use a carrier oil with essential oils is in the treatment of eczema. Use coconut oil as your carrier, and add in lavender and tea tree oils. Read this for more recipes.
- You will see results. And this is the heart of why you should open your mind to using oils for whatever ails you. For centuries y’all this is all there was. Tonics, oils, potions. There were no pharmaceuticals. And the human race survived, thrived even. You break your leg, well oil ain’t gonna help you. Surgery and a whole lotta ice and rest are what you’ll need. But damn, a little lavender oil might just calm your nerves. Try tea tree oil for acne and skin tags. Oregano oil is widely considered to shorten the duration of a cold or flu. Vitamin E oil is great for aftershave (both my boyfriend and I use it daily, and viola, no razor burn!).
Give it a go. If you have a favorite oil that has tested tried and true for you, please shoot us a message on social media and start a conversation!
