Therapists at New York’s Affinia Dumont hotel and spa are all business, and that’s a good thing. How else could you explain the way they know just how to attack the ropy knots in your shoulders and forearms that come from too much computer mousing, and the tight hamstrings from parking your butt too long in a desk chair?
Billing itself as New York’s first “executive suite fitness hotel,” the Affinia Dumont is the new incarnation of the former Dumont Plaza on East 34th Street between Lexington and Third Avenues. A multi-million-dollar, top-to-bottom renovation, completed in May, included redesigning rooms with ergonomic furnishings, customized beds, pillow menus (if you need to rest your head on buckwheat) and fitness-friendly touches like full-length wall mirrors with enough space in front of them to accommodate your in-room workout or yoga session.
The spa, open to walk-ins and hotel guests, has seven treatment rooms including two big enough for couples. It uses Avanc© products (Anti-stress Remedy aromatic massage oil seems to flow by the gallon!) and the top treatments are Aromatherapy and Deep Tissue massages. Another favorite is the Energizing Foot and Leg Therapy, divine after a day of pounding the pavement.
To keep you in shape, the hotel provides “Fit Kits,” including running or walking kits, which come with heart monitors or pedometers, Discman or MP3 players, and maps of the city among other things. The strength training kit delivers weights, stretching bands, and an exercise ball to your room, if you don’t feel like hitting the hotel’s shiny new gym.
The “Fitness Concierge” will hook you up with personal trainers, fitness classes, even find you places that offer everything from fat-free snacks to veggie take-out. And if you’re a frequent guest, the hotel will hang on to your sneakers and workout gear so they’re fresh and ready for you on your next visit.
