Far more flavor-packed than your average veggie oil, EVOO can enhance your health from head to toe. Here’s how.

Eat More Olive Oil

Breast cancer defense. In a lab study from the journal Carcinogenesis last year, scientists discovered that olive oil may squash certain proteins linked to the spread of breast cancer cells. What’s more, a number of previous studies show that people with a higher intake of olive oil may have a reduced risk of breast cancer.

More brain power. An olive oil compound known as oleocanthal may help protect against Alzheimer’s disease as you age, according to preliminary research published in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology in 2009.

Less inflammation. Several studies suggest that oleocanthal may also cool inflammation, a health problem linked to a slew of major diseases (including heart disease, cancer, and diabetes) and many common ailments (such as arthritis, allergies, and irritable bowel syndrome).

Better gut health. A 2009 study from the University of East Anglia shows that olive oil may help fend off ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease. In tests on more than 25,000 people, the study’s authors determined that oleic acid (a substance found in olive oil) may help fight colitis by taming inflammation.
