Get Savvy about Cellulite

I was 19-years-old, trying on a swimsuit in a fluorescently lit dressing room with a three-way mirror when I had my first encounter with every woman’s foe: cellulite.

Many years later, despite a healthy diet and exercise regime, cellulite continues to be my unwanted accessory to swimsuit season. With summer around the corner, what is a woman to do?

Overwhelmed by the links found after Googling “cellulite treatment”, I called my dermatologist who suggested a treatment process called the Dermosonic Method. Long used as a pre-treatment by cosmetic surgeons performing liposuction, Dermosonic targets cellulite, or trapped fat, by combining ultrasound and vacuum pressure massage.

I was referred to Lynn Banfi who performs Dermosonic treatments at Per Amore in Beverly Hills. Banfi explained that there are no quick fixes when it comes to reducing the appearance of cellulite. Response to the treatment depends on two things: lifestyle and genetics. I would notice better results if I consumed even more than the recommended eight glasses of water per day, limited caffeine, and kept up with my healthy diet and exercise routine. She did caution me that when it comes to genetics some women no matter what their size are more predisposed to cellulite, which is why results from the Dermosonic method vary.

I began the treatment lying face down on Banfi’s comfortable massage table, relaxing to soft music and the aroma of lavender candles. She first applied a warming gel to prep my upper leg/butt area for the ultrasound treatment, which consists of gentle massage with the ultrasound device for about ten minutes. The ultrasound gently warms the underlying layers of the skin to prepare the tissue for the benefits of vacuum therapy during which the therapist uses a handheld tool resembling a showerhead that lightly suctions the skin to lift the warmed connective tissue. This process improves circulation and encourages lymphatic flow so that fat cells release excess fluid, which results in both deceased size of the fat cells as well as a smoother appearance on the skin.

Rather than being painful, the procedure was incredibly therapeutic. The grand finale was a deep massage of the treated areas using toning cream containing hibiscus extracts, which are said to inhibit fat production and stimulate fat breakdown; Echinacea, which helps to improve the firmness of the skin; and Hyaluronic acid, which helps maintain optimal moisture levels. This left my skin feeling extremely nourished and elastic.

After the hour-long treatment, I was shocked when I looked in the mirror and saw immediate results. My butt already looked significantly smoother and “perkier.” Then I put on my jeans and noticed they felt looser in the butt and thigh area. The only immediate side effects I noticed were mild itching from the amount of skin exfoliation and extreme thirst, which I was told mean my lymphatic system had been kick-started.

The results from Dermosonic last for about a week; however, with consistent treatment coupled with a healthy lifestyle the results can last for as long as a month at a time. Six weeks after my first treatment and on a weekly maintenance plan, I am happy with my continued results and will not be walking out of swimming pools backwards this summer!
