Every once in a while our income shifts in a drastic way, whether losing a job, quitting, or changing careers, and this necessary shift helps us re-evaluate our expenses. But unfortunately, once the money starts coming back in we usually revert to our old, spend-heavy habits.

Experts attest, however, that this desire to always want more actually makes us even more unhappy in the short and long term. Yep, there isn’t even an immediate buzz from spending. It quickly disintegrates as soon as we find something new to place our heartstrings upon. So why not learn how to live with less- and really live with what you NEED?

  1. Evaluate. What is it that you have too much of? Where are your obsessions? Is it shoes? Jeans? Cookbooks? Look through your possessions and begin to note the things you have more than enough of. Oftentimes, we have so much we can’t even use it all. I mean really, if you have 15 cookbooks with 100 recipes a piece, are you going to ever use 1500 recipes? From there, whittle away. How much do you NEED? Jeans- maybe 3 pairs? Five max? Decide what seems reasonable and purge. Donate, giveaway, trade with a friend for something you might actually need.
  2. Write. When you’re wishing to shop or are feeling envious of a friend’s new something, take a moment and figure out what it is that you really want. Or maybe what that “thing” really symbolizes. I remember when a girlfriend came home with a brand new purse and I was jealous. After sitting with it for awhile, I realized that it wasn’t the purse I wanted so badly, it was the non-guilt attached with her purchase. But the more I thought, the more I realized, I had things I didn’t feel guilty about purchasing- things that made me feel so much better personally.. My yoga classes, a once-a-month cleaning of my home.
  3. Create your wish list. Now, we aren’t suggesting you never want a thing. But we are suggesting pairing that list down. Now that you’ve gone through your current situations and the desires that may come up for you, take a moment and think about things that you do really want. Things that will improve your life in some way, or might make your life easier, smoother, or more healthy. Now, how can you budget for these few things?
