The Greenhouse Baby & Me Week

The indoor swimming pool is a grand, classical affair, well worthy of such past clients as Elizabeth Taylor and Nancy Reagan. And then you notice that it’s lined with tiny rubber duckies. The interior of the chauffeured airport limo is sleek black leather “and it comes retrofitted with an infant car seat. Elegant bedroom suites boast luxe linens and high-society cream-and-jade furnishings as well as cribs, changing tables, and a variety of developmental toys. So what kind of five-star spa is this?

The all-women Greenhouse spa in Arlington, Texas, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, is known for superb service and an ambience of Southern gentility “a destination for society ladies on the Palm Beach-Aspen axis. Now, twice a year, the spa hosts a special Baby and Me Week (from $3,850). The retreat offers mothers of newborns to one-year-olds a chance to find inner peace and recapture outer glow without leaving the cherubs behind.

Too often, traveling with an infant is like taking a pleasure cruise in a hurricane “there’s just no fun in it. But the Greenhouse makes it easier than ever. They supply every imaginable baby amenity from strollers, diapers, and bouncy seats to your child’s preferred brand of baby food. And leave the workout gear at home; T-shirts, gym shorts, and robes await you in your room.

Between breakfasts-in-bed and nightly tuck-in massages, there’s no shortage of things to do. Leading parenting experts from across the country teach mommy-and-baby classes in music, movement, and bodywork; give lectures; and moderate spirited discussions. During a recent Baby and Me week, guests participated in courses on Infant Massage, Itsy Bitsy Yoga, Baby Etiquette, and learned how to establish healthy sleep patterns.

Nurturing on-staff nannies come to the rescue whenever mommy wants time to herself. Daily massages, facials, workout classes, makeovers, and other treats are included in the package. But most guests will want to sample the extras, like Shirodhara Dosha balancing, craniosacral therapy, ear candling, and acupuncture.

For new moms, enjoying a meal with two hands and an empty lap is as likely as finding a husband who really shares diaper duty. At the Greenhouse, nannies feed and entertain the kids while mothers gather for adults-only luncheons and suppers. White-gloved waiters graciously present fare so delicious and satisfying that it’s hard to believe the standard Greenhouse cuisine adds up to only 1,200 calories a day. An on-staff nutritionist supplements the regimen for breastfeeding mothers and others who require a heartier diet.

But perhaps the biggest draw of the program is the camaraderie. Becoming a new mother often feels like you’ve landed alone on an alien planet. With friends to share the experience, it’s as though there are suddenly other people on the planet with you. Perhaps this is why the Baby and Me week is known for fostering friendships that endure long after that last fleck of polish has chipped off your once impeccable Greenhouse pedicure.
