Snow! Three days so far here in the Colorado Rockies, which is far too soon. One of my daily rituals is an afternoon break for a cup of tea and some contemplation, and as the weather turns cooler, I especially love to dally over a cup of steaming, sweetly scented chai. About once a week, I walk into town to get my fix at Khatmandu, a local restaurant run by a family from Nepal. The chai there is divine, but I recently stumbled across a serious contender while visiting British Columbia. While in Vancouver, I participated in a chef-guided food tour with Edible BC. Chef and founder Eric Pateman led me to the Granville Island Tea Company’s café, located within the Public Market, where I was treated to one of the best chai blends I’ve ever sipped. The owners, Deborah and Mark, told me that adding a little butter to the brew is the secret of their sweet, smooth concoction. I was hooked enough to leave with a supply of their signature blend stuffed into my carry-on.
