Chocolate isn’t just for breakups. This powerhouse is now a staple superfood. The benefits of chocolate are plenty.
First off, dark chocolate is much better for your health than white or milk chocolate. Here are other benefits:
- Chocolate makes you smarter. There is a lot of research that shows that the flavonols in dark chocolate can increase cerebral blood flow, which will, in turn, trigger the development of new blood vessels and brain cells. Adults perform better on cognitive tests after eating small portions of the dark chocolate. SAY WHAT, you read that right, eating chocolate can help boost performance.
- Chocolate improves heart health. You may have heard how chocolates can help your heart health, but a new study proved that regular chocolate eaters who had heart disease were less likely to die following a heart attack compared with the people who didn’t treat themselves to the creamy treat.
- It’s good for your teeth. Your dentist may tell you to reach for the dark chocolate instead of the floss. You don’t necessarily want to trade in your toothbrush and floss for a chocolate bar. But new research shows a compound that is found in chocolate — theobromine — may be just as good as fluoride at hardening tooth enamel. Which means that the compound could find its way into toothpaste and mouthwash in the near future.
Now the not so upside of chocolate.
Dark chocolate has lots of calories. Over 150 calories in one ounce. If you are on a diet stay away. Your dentist may recommend dark chocolate three times a week as perfectly safe treat for your teeth and your overall health.
