“Man who invented the hamburger was smart; Man who invented the cheeseburger was a genius.”
– Matthew McConaughey

Summer is here and its time to fire up the grill. Whether you’re a meat eater or not, whether you steer clear of gluten or love a starchy bun, there are ways in which we can all still enjoy a faithful burger. And in the name of healthy living, there’s absolutely no reason why your burger can’t be a healthy one, too.

We’ve got 9 meatless burger masterpieces + one with meat, served up hot and with a pickle …

1. Sweet Potato Veggie Burger with Avocado

A burger doesn’t have to be made of meat to qualify as a burger. A patty can be made up of whatever you feel like using, and vegetarian and vegan burgers can be bound by pulses like beans and lentils or by ingredients such as sweet potato. This panko-crusted burger is tender thanks to the sweet potato and creamy white bean mix. Throw it into a bun, add some crispy romaine lettuce leaves and garnish with ripe avocado slides, dijon mustard and lots of onion. Now scoff at those who say vegan burgers can’t be badass!

2. Smoky Black Bean Beet Burgers

At first glance I would not think that this burger was vegan or healthy. The raw beetroot lends a magenta hue that looks almost meat-like, making these sure to confuse even the biggest of meat eaters. With ten ingredients, including black beans, beets, quinoa, and walnuts, bound into one delicious burger, this burger has a ton of flavor. Top as you please, but ketchup, mustard and onions is a simple, yet, winning combination in my household.

3. Grilled Halloumi & Red Pepper Burgers

Whether you’re vegetarian or just looking for a meatless way to enjoy a burger, then this grilled halloumi and red pepper burger should be right up your street. The burger is stacked with halloumi, red peppers and zucchini, all of  which have been grilled for extra flavor. Also, if you’ve tried halloumi and not been much of a fan, you must try grilling it, it’ll change your mind entirely. Throw in a bunch of salad leaves and top with salsa (or sweet chilli for a change) and all that’s left to do is to decipher how you’ll bite into this without it all spilling out.

4. Buffalo Cauliflower Sandwich

I’m not sure about you, but I like my burger dripping with sauce and jam-packed with goodies. So for me this recipe is the perfect burger. The buffalo cauliflower is a great meat substitute as, once baked, cauliflower becomes very meaty in texture. Throw on some vegan ranch dressing, some slices of tomato, fresh onion and crisp lettuce and you could very well call this burger p-e-r-f-e-c-t-i-o-n.
