Hilton Head Health Institute, Hilton Head Island, South Carolina
My arrival at Hilton Head Health Institute (known as H3I for short) marks the beginning of my mission to master the fundamentals of a healthy lifestyle – from what to eat and how to shop, to stress management and optimal strategies for working out.
Philosophy
It’s quickly apparent that the approach here is simple: Take responsibility for your health, be serious about your commitment, and recognize that successful weight loss involves more than just cutting calories. H3I provides a supportive environment to help facilitate lifestyle changes, with an encouraging and knowledgeable staff that includes health and fitness expert Bob Wright, M.A.T., clinical psychologist and author Howard Rankin, Ph.D., and fitness instructor Jessica Lynn (who holds a degree in Exercise Science).
Activities
H3I’s wide range of daily classes include water fitness, mat Pilates, yoga, body sculpting, medicine ball workouts, Dyna-band conditioning, kickboxing, and low-impact aerobics. Daily seminars with experts teach the basics of nutrition and healthy eating. These engaging, informative sessions tackle such topics as portion control, meal planning, proper shoe fitting, guided imagery, adaptive thinking, and how to deal with the inevitable slips and relapses that are part of the journey toward healthy body weight. Meals are followed by self-guided, ten minute Thermal Walks to help keep metabolism elevated. Special weekly excursions include sea kayaking and cycling expeditions. The campus includes a full-service workout center, pool, saunas, locker rooms, seminar rooms, dining area, and a separate building for fitness classes. Accommodations are comfy condominiums located adjacent to the main campus. Though many guests opt to use bicycles as transportation to and from campus, I choose to walk in order to take full advantage of the scenery, which includes alligators swimming languidly beneath a footbridge.
Cuisine
Calories are controlled, but the food is never boring. Guests consume an average of 1,200 calories per day, broken into three meals and three snacks. The snacks, called Metabo Meals, are 100-calorie pick-me-ups (such as freshly sliced fruit or vegetables) designed to keep hunger at bay between main meals. At breakfast, lunch, and dinner, we gather at large round tables in the dining room that invite conversation and camaraderie. Meals, served by staff, include grilled fish, lean meats, delicious soups, and creatively prepared vegetables. Special dietary needs are easily accommodated.
Pampering & Rewards
Morning sunrise walks along the nearby beach are a daily highlight for me, as are evening strolls beneath the moss-covered trees in the tranquil neighborhoods adjacent to H3I. There’s also an on-site spa offering reflexology and hot stone treatments, aromatherapy, and therapeutic massages.
The Experience
Prior to arrival, I answered an extensive questionnaire covering my health history, exercise habits, and personal goals. Once on campus, my first morning was spent being weighed, measured, and having blood drawn to ascertain fasting glucose levels, blood pressure, triglycerides, and a complete breakdown of cholesterol with LDL and HDL ratios. This was followed by a meeting with my personal lifestyle counselor, where we discussed my goals at length and determined which of the following week’s seminars and fitness classes would best help me get on track. My counselor helped me with my greatest challenge, which is how to make healthy food choices and maintain my workout schedule in the midst of frequent travel. I left with a renewed sense of commitment and optimism, as well as a selection of tools for making more favorable fitness and nutritional choices – both at home and on the road.

Green Mountain at Fox Run, Ludlow, Vermont
Nestled on a Vermont hillside, Green Mountain at Fox Run presents a non-diet, educational approach for women seeking healthier lifestyles. Although I stayed the minimum week-long period, participants are encouraged to stay two or more weeks to form constructive habits and practice positive changes in the way they view their bodies, cope with stress, and handle their physical, mental, and spiritual hungers.
Philosophy
Green Mountain strives to educate and empower women to make smart choices that lead to better health. The three-fold approach includes mindful, balanced eating, physical activity, and behavioral awareness. The unspoken factor is the powerful group dynamic: during my week I witnessed how quickly the demographically diverse women bonded in this “safe” environment, forming a support group to encourage each other at every step.
The program emphasizes curtailing negative self-talk and recognizing that successes – large and small – are more meaningful than numbers on a scale. “Women come here because they want to lose weight,” says Executive Director Alan Wayler, PhD in nutritional biochemistry and metabolism. “When they leave they talk about finding themselves and feeling good again.”
Activities
The emphasis is to get moving, so every day features “Vermonting” expeditions – walks to a covered bridge, waterfall, or other attraction. There are basic strength training and cardio classes daily plus fundamental Pilates, yoga, and fitBALL sessions. DansKinetics and “Shake Your Soul” sessions are also geared to reawaken the joy of movement. The schedule includes daily workshops on topics addressing nutrition, metabolism, motivation and emotion-based eating, as well as private consultations. Guests can also sign up for optional one-on-ones with staff members.
Cuisine
I enjoyed simple, flavorful, satisfying meals, and was surprised to see “comfort foods” generally precluded by the dieters’ mentality – including pizza and macaroni and cheese – on the menu. The breakfast buffet let us practice making choices that fulfilled our nutritional guidelines, while the plated lunch and dinner menus taught guests about portion-control. The chefs readily accommodated my vegan diet. Overall, we were encouraged to forget obsessions with calories, carbs, or fat grams and focus on recognizing true feelings of hunger and finding satiety through mindful eating.
Pampering & Rewards
Green Mountain offers on-site reflexology, Reiki, and a variety of massages at night. After gaining greater acceptance of their bodies during their stay, several women indulged in their first-ever massage. For me, the greatest luxury was spending time with my new girlfriends in the lounge, where one night a publishing executive organized a fierce poker game. Another evening featured a piano performance by a nurse, who had sheet music sent from home after she recognized that playing music would enhance her four-week stay.
The Experience
I met intelligent, accomplished women of all ages and professions with weight-loss goals ranging from 20 to over 100 pounds. Guests staying longer than a week were weighed and measured upon arrival and again at departure. During my stay, I witnessed women overcome anxieties and gain strength and confidence. One woman conquered her fear of the fitBALL; another with debilitating knee pain strengthened her legs enough to tackle the steep, three-mile trail down Okemo Mountain. A young recruit trying to meet airforce fitness requirements took me on a hike to the mountain’s peak; we shaved twenty minutes off her previous time and still managed to enjoy the brilliant fall foliage along the way. Even after just one week, I left with a solid understanding of how exercise, rather than caloric deprivation, is the key to reaching my ideal weight, and with the commitment to make it an enjoyable part of my day, every day.
