Make New Friends
Continued from our Retreat & Renew Daily Tip.
The old adage is true. You want to keep your old friends and make new ones, both of which can be challenging as we age. Time, commitments, and life seem to get in the way. But research has shown that these connections have a significant impact on our overall happiness as well as our well-being. Try these 3 tips to add and keep more friends into your life.
- Keep your old friends. Friends that have stuck by your side are worth keeping. Try to nourish the friendships even if you can’t see each other on a regular basis. My best friend and I live across the country, but we write each other at least every other month and call each other every week. The personal cards always bring at least one laugh and one tear… and help remind us both of how much we impact each other even when we are apart.
- Make new friends. Invite someone new into your social group. The new mom at your daughter’s school is probably feeling pretty isolated. Set up a monthly date and change it up. Learn something new. Go to a painting class or to a pole dancing class. Or just grab a tea or wine and chat. You’ll feel better afterward.
- Pass the goodwill along. Recently, in several communities across the U.S. individuals in the Starbucks drive-through would pay for the car behind them. The love was passed along, as people would randomly share the love. The best part? You’re making someone’s day and asking for nothing in return. The ultimate way to brighten the world.
