This holiday season, vow to not gain the average 6 pounds most Americans take on from Thanksgiving to New Years. (To do this, we eat 600 more calories EVERY DAY!) Crazy, huh? Easily done if you’re having a piece of pie or even your favorite Starbucks Pumpkin Latte a few times a week.

Speaking of lattes, here’s our list of the best vs. worst list of holiday foods and the pumpkin latte fares okay.

  1. Have an Americano or a plain latte instead of a mocha. Anything with extra names, i.e. White Chocolate Mocha or Toffee Irish Cream Latte is just a pseudonym for extra sugar. (Some of these drinks have upwards of 500 calories.)
  2. Speaking of sweet, choose wisely and plan ahead. If you know you have a party this week, try to skip the extra sweets that add up (that handful of M&Ms for instance) and put your calories to good use. But still eat wisely. For instance, a slice of pecan pie has 800 calories whereas pumpkin has between 300-400.
  3. Add water and protein to the mix. Both water and protein will help you from eating and drinking too much. Often we eat when we’re thirsty, or we go for a cocktail just to quench our thirst. Try having a glass of water before you hit the party. And once you’re there, make a bee-line for protein-rich appetizers, including our favorite hummus and veggie sticks, or shrimp cocktail, both of which are low fat, high in protein, and high in vitamins too!
  4. Don’t fool yourself. Having a Cobb salad, for instance, isn’t any healthier (in most instances) than a burger. If you really want the burger, go for the burger, just try and skip any extra sauces, cheese, or bacon!
