Balancing Blues

Everyone experiences those “Calgon moments” when life feels overwhelming and it seems impossible to stay balanced and on an even keel. Even little things can start to irritate, making you feel jumpy and on edge.
If you’re trying to regain your center after a life storm has blown you off course, these natural wellness tools can bring you back to balance and right your ship.
1. Aromatherapy oils-
Frankincense and cedarwood help to balance the pineal gland, also known as the “master gland”, which regulates all the major hormonal systems of the body. So if hormonal imbalance is contributing to your overwhelm, these two oils can bring relief. (Link to holistic dad?)
2. Physical activity-
If you need to burn off some steam, a vigorous hike, swim or workout can help you return to center. Yoga poses like the Tree Pose http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/496 can also help nurture a sense of inner calm and strength in your body.
3. Food-
When your external life is feeling out of whack, comfort food can feel like a safe place to turn. Try to substitute healthy options like raw chocolate sweetened with natural sugars, rather than a standard candy bar, or mac and cheese made with whole grain pasta and goat cheese. Balancing grains like quinoa or amaranth are also good to incorporate during times of stress.
4. Breath-
Stuck in traffic and feeling ready to scream? Try a balancing yogic breath: breath in to a count of 5, hold for a count of 5 and breath out for a count of 7. Repeat at least three cycles of this breath before returning to a regular breath.
