With the opening of Canyon Ranch Living on Miami Beach this fall, buyers of spa residences will have more choices than ever. According to Spa Finder, 200 such properties are in various stages of development. Beyond retirement homes, spa residences are attracting younger families with children, plus aging baby boomers, by offering direct, daily access to a wide range of wellness and medical services.
Spa Living
Architect Robert Henry, whose New York-based firm designed the spas at Wynn Las Vegas, and Potion Lounge in Manhattan, is working with Canyon Ranch Living on a 67-story tower overlooking Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, which is expected to open in 2010. The city spa will play an important part in community life, Henry comments. “An increasing synergy in spa, hotel, and residential design is morphing into wellness communities, a new, almost utopian hybrid model, where the community is designed to integrate wellness for the mind, body, and soul.”
Miraval Living in Manhattan
The conversion of a 41-story New York City apartment tower into Miraval Living was fueled by Steve Case’s acquisition of Miraval near Tucson, Arizona. Miraval Living offers condo amenities, lifestyle counseling, and spa services. Designed by the architectural firm Bonetti/Kozerski, residences are eco-friendly, featuring natural walnut floors and textured limestone and sandstone in the bathrooms. Swim in a pool fitted with saline filters that eliminate chorine; practice yoga in a rooftop garden that absorbs heat and rainfall; or drop-in for lectures by lifestyle gurus; the options are endless. The Cafe offers award-winning menus from Arizona. Buyers must ante up for the annual spa membership, from $3,800 to $7,300 for a three-bedroom unit while the units themselves range from 650,000 to 3 million dollars. Canyon Ranch Living Comes to Miami Beach
The first Canyon Ranch Living community, scheduled to open this fall, combines a beach club atmosphere with life management programs and branded spa services. Located at 69th and Collins Avenue, the two new towers of condominiums complement the hotel with direct access to the oceanfront wellness center. Select your activities from a daily schedule that includes classes and lectures on nutrition, strength training, and cardio to a Latin beat. What truly distinguishes this year-round program are the preventive and integrative medical services that address your personal needs. By working out with a team of medical specialists, fitness specialists, and bodyworkers, you can target problems and chart your progress.
Beyond typical spa offerings, Canyon Ranch Living also offers experiences in intimacy and sexual function. Your choices on any given day may vary from craniosacral therapy or stress management consultations to an aqua therapy session in the pool. Swiss Perfection in Miami
Making a trek to Switzerland used to be the only way you could experience the medical and aesthetic services of Clinique La Prairie. Now their lakefront spa is cloning a smaller sister in Miami, Florida. Conceived and developed by the owner of the Swiss original, Armin Matti, Miami’s Clinique La Prairie Lifestyle Living features a two-story spa, fitness center, and swimming pool in the 50-floor condominium tower called Ten Museum Park, it’s scheduled to open this fall.
Stunning views of Biscayne Bay tell you this is a new way of enjoying Swiss style. Clinique La Prairie will offer a full range of treatments with Matti’s new brand, Swiss Perfection, plus advanced lasers for sunspot removal. But you’ll have to buy a condo or membership to get in. At the moment, unfortunately, they’re sold out. For more information call (305) 532-9814 or visit www.tenmuseumpark.com
MyAnanda
Breaking new ground, The Chopra Center will be incorporated into a new residential project branded as MyAnanda in Color-ado. The property, nestled between Boulder and Denver, will feature a 200-acre park, 45 miles of trails, and a 17,000-square-foot Chopra Center & Spa. Everything from luxury studios to penthouse suites are available, all with views of the Rocky Mountains. The residents will benefit from discount services at the Chopra Center and the adjacent Westin Westminster Hotel. For more information visit www.myananda.com
Om on the Beach with Aveda Lifestyle
Ayurveda meets Aveda at the Amrit community to be built on Singer Island, just north of Palm Beach, Florida. Home of the first Aveda Lifestyle Spa, the oceanfront enclave is the collective vision of Florida developer Dilip Barot, a native of India; Aveda; and Pennsylvania’s Himalayan Institute. Specialists in Ayurveda will be on hand to administer herbal oil massage, and analyze your doshas.
There will be three towers configured with 2- and 3-bedroom units, plus 96 hotel suites and about 150 condo units. “We worked on the concept together” comments Alison Howland, Aveda director of spa development. “Going to a day spa is not enough; now people say ‘I want that in my life every day’.” For more information call (561) 848-5823 or visit www.amrit.com
