We’re seeing the future of skincare and it’s black and it’s gritty and even a bit mucky. But it’s totally worth it!

If you follow trends, then you probably already know that charcoal is this year’s go-to ingredient for food. You heard that right. Our smoothies are going to be getting a whole lot darker. But if you thought it was just the food industry going wild for charcoal this year, then think again. It’s a favorite in the beauty industry, too.

Why is everyone going wild for charcoal? Well, the chalky, gritty stuff helps extract all the junk from your skin; its like a glue, pulling all that grime, excess oil and dirt from your pores and leaving you with clearer, healthier skin. Still not convinced? Here are other ways in which charcoal will be your new BFF.

  • Say bye-bye to shiny, oily skin.
Oily skin can be a killer for confidence. I used to suffer terribly in my t-zone area, so I know exactly what it’s like to feel good only to have your confidence crash when the shine suddenly creeps through your make-up. Activated charcoal works by pulling excess oil from the skin, leaving your skin more matte. With oily skin you do have to be careful not to overuse products, as they can have the adverse effect of overly drying out the skin. A little side note: if you already suffer from dry skin you may want to skip this and use charcoal in a different way.
  • Get those pearly whites even whiter.
Finally, we can have those Hollywood pearly whites without forking out a small fortune to achieve them. Who knew that all this time, charcoal was our tooth-whitening godsend? This may freak you out at first. Especially when you look into the mirror and see those black teeth staring back at you. But once you brush the charcoal powder around your teeth (and really rinse your mouth) you’ll find whiter teeth staring back at you. Just like with beauty products, charcoal draws out and removes food and drink stains as well as bacteria and plaque build up.
  • Pimples, anyone?
Erugh. I know that feeling when a pimple decides to move in unannounced and take up residence on your whole face. Well, that’s how it feels anyway. Let’s face it, pimples are ugly, they hurt and sometimes, when we can’t help but pick at them, they scar. Well, halt them in their tracks with an activated charcoal spot treatment. Simply mix charcoal powder with water until a thick paste forms and then use it as a treatment, leaving it on for a few minutes before washing off. Voila!
  • Rids hair of toxins.
Did you think it was just our skin that absorbs toxins? Nope! It’s our hair, too. Do you ever feel as though your hair is weighing you down, even when you’ve just washed it? Your hair is telling you that it needs some TLC and a little detox. Similar to how it works with skin, activated charcoal works by pulling dirt, oil and product build-up, and toxins from the hair follicle, leaving your hair lighter and more vibrant.

FYI: If you have very light hair then you may want to steer clear of activated charcoal products as it may turn your locks a rather unfortunate shade. Those of you with darker hair look for shampoo products that already contain activated charcoal, or you could go DIY and break a capsule into your current shampoo.

  • Soothes irritations.
Activated charcoal can be used to speed up the healing process and it also works to relieve the symptoms from things like insect bites, bee stings, cuts and even minor infections. Not bad for one product, right? When mixed into a thick, topical paste, activated charcoal works by absorbing the venom from bites, reducing swelling and lessening pain.

Its worth noting that before you go hunting for lumps of coal in the fireplace or stealing them from the barbeque, you’ll want to invest in some activated charcoal. It’s made by burning a source of carbon such as wood or coconut shells, and then applying a high temperature to it which removes all of the oxygen before it’s then activated with gases like steam. It may sound a bit scientific but the end result is a highly absorbent material that has millions of tiny pores that then work to remove heavy metals, chemicals and all kinds of nasty stuff from our skin and our body.
