Cleanse Your Diet

Making dietary changes is a great way to detox your body. Ashley Koff, RD, recommends that if you are starting a detox program you first consult a dietician or healthcare practitioner. “The most important things are knowing if any substances you will take as part of the detox conflict with current medications and also if any type of food program will interfere with your current health. For example, if you have borderline elevated blood sugar we want to make sure you don’t go too long without nutrients and also avoided certain juices.”

Once you start your detox, you should gauge how your body is reacting and find out if those reactions are normal and healthy. “You should know that during a detox you will likely feel fatigued, maybe even fluish, have alternating temperatures and maybe even be sweaty or clammy as the body clears your systems. Keep in mind that a detox is not for weight loss. Many [people]have the expectation that they can lose weight during a detox but actually the detox is more of a prep for sustainable healthy weight loss.”

According to Koff, you can gently detox on a daily basis by incorporating more vegetables, both cooked and raw, into your diet, as well as adding good quality grains like quinoa and millet, both of which provide a complete protein when consumed in their whole form. In addition, fresh produce including apples, lemon, celery, broccoli, dandelion greens, and parsley are naturally detoxifying and can be easily added into your daily diet.

Detoxify with Yoga

Table Top Shoulder Opener and Twist: Start on your hands and knees, with your hands underneath your shoulders and your knees under your hips. Reach your right arm up toward the sky, and then release it under your left, moving your shoulder to the floor. Bring your gaze to the left. You should find yourself in a shoulder opener, inversion, and twist. Hold for 5-10 breaths. Inhale, release, and repeat on the other side.
