Dirty Dozen

This year, the Environmental Working Group released their updated reports showing that the dirty dozen is really the dirty fourteen (not as catchy, we know)… adding two of our favorites to this pesticide-laden list, kale and greens as well as green beans.
The top 12 +2:
- Apples
- Celery
- Sweet bell peppers
- Peaches
- Strawberries
- Imported Nectarines
- Grapes
- Spinach
- Lettuce
- Cucumbers
- Domestic Blueberries
- Potatoes
++ Green Beans
++ Kale/Greens
What makes a food dirty? Trace amounts of pesticide residue found on most produce sampled. Looking for clean food? Here’s the Clean 15:
- Onions
- Sweet Corn
- Pineapples
- Avocado
- Cabbage
- Sweet peas
- Asparagus
- Mangoes
- Eggplant
- Kiwi
- Domestic Cantaloupe
- Sweet potatoes
- Grapefruit
- Watermelon
- Mushrooms
So why does it all matter? These pesticide residues have toxic consequences and are ending up in our drinking water and even our children’s baby food. Learning how to navigate the produce aisle, while still feeding your family healthy veggies and fruits is key, and this list should become your companion shopper at the supermarket or natural food store.
