Every time you turn on the TV or open a magazine, you’re likely to read about some new connection between something you do everyday (ie: cell phones) and your health (cancer?). Some of these connections are strong; others, however, are just “links” and if you can limit exposure you’re probably going to be fine. And truth be told: living a life in a state of fear is probably more detrimental for your health than running into a few toxins here and there if you can keep an optimistic attitude.
Avoid Completely
VOCs
Found in paint and vinyl (like your shower curtain), VOCs are linked with a variety of respiratory and development problems. And your shower curtain also contains phthalates, which have been shown to cause reproductive problems.
Synthetic Fragrances
According to Sara Snow, green living expert, synthetic fragrances are made of hundreds of chemicals that can cause everything from asthma and allergies to headaches, diarrhea, and even depression.
Limit Your Exposure
Non-organic produce
Organic is better, but non-organic produce is okay if you choose your produce carefully. Avoid the dirty dozen (the most pesticide-laden produce), and then go with non-organic for such items as bananas, avocados, and onions.
BPA
BPA is linked to reproductive issues, and as reports have recently found BPA in canned goods, it is best to limit your use of canned goods. Luckily, most canned goods are also available frozen. Easy switch.
Nonstick pans
Nonstick pans contain chemicals that may suppress your immunity and have been connected with thyroid issues. However, if the nonstick pan has been washed several times and has NO scratches, the likelihood of chemicals leaching is much more minimal. Still not convinced? Try a greener option, or stick with stainless or copper.
