Essence of Vali founder Valerie Bennis has a passion for the healing power of plants.

ValerieAs a trained aromatherapist, Bennis has created a line of oils that not only smell good, but also are effective in helping everyday concerns like sleeplessness, muscle aches and hormonal imbalances. Essence of Vali’s Sleep blend is one of their most popular products, with oils like lavender and ylang ylang promoting relaxation and calm. Healing Lifestyles had an opportunity to chat with Valerie recently and learn more about her approach to aromatherapy and life.

What do you most enjoy about your work?

Contact with my clients and the stories I hear. I have a client who has a chronic knee condition and she’s been using the Relief blend for five years. Or people who have used the sleep oil and had positive results. The human contact. The real pleasure and gratification comes from the feedback from people.

Favorite essential oils?

Bergamot. I like all citrus oils but Bergamot is more unusual and more interesting than the other citrus’. We use it in our uplifting blend and it’s good for the blues and to remove excess water in body. It also can be used on the skin for oily skin and for respiratory infections. It does increase photosensitivy in skin, so it’s important to be careful when wearing Bergamot in the sun and use with a carrier. One more great Bergamot use is that it is very refreshing and makes a great summer essential oil mister, just add a few drops of Bergamot to a misting bottle and place in the fridge to cool.

What’s new at EOV?

One of our most popular products is the sleep blend, so we did a sleep challenge for the month of September where we challenged our customers to sleep 7 to 8 hours a night using some of the sleep tips we put on our website.

How do you use or recommend using essential oils in daily life?

In a diffuser or in mist form-instead of grabbing a cup of coffee for energy use an energizing blend. In bath oil-jojobo is a great carrier for the bath not as oily. Heavy cream is another way to diffuse them without an oily residue. Epsom salts baths with oils. Massage feet at night, or use a little in hair or on the face.

What do you love the most about aromatherapy?

I think it’s really important that people know that aromatherapy goes beyond a nice smell. They really do have healing properties. The oils are really nature’s gift to us. Oils come from all the world. They are here to help us-that’s their purpose. Any of the oils that comes from trees are very grounding and fortifying. The citrus’ are very cheerful and uplifting and they show that in how they look. Leaves are good for respiratory and flowers are good for the heart.

How are your blends used in the world?

We have corporate customers who have bought sleep kits to give out at a sales meeting. We also work with hotels, spas and retail outlets to distribute the oils.
