While many spa programs promise to change your life, how many of them actually help rechart your inner realms or psychic habits, which strongly influence your health and effectiveness in the external world? If you’ve ever caught yourself thinking such negative thoughts as I’m not good enough, My life is too hard, I’ll never get married, and the like, then the Positive Thinking and Thought Power Retreat at One & Only Palmilla in Los Cabos, Mexico, is a great place to reprogram how you view the world and think about your life with more positivity.‚ This retreat is designed to help you listen more closely to your inner monologues, to practice how to think in positive terms, and to feel the power of your innate life force, as opposed to cultivating negative thoughts.
Clinical psychologist Alice Domar, Ph.D. notes in her book, Self-Nurture: Learning to Care for Yourself as Effectively as You Care for Everyone Else (Penguin, 2001), that more women than men construct overwhelmingly negative interior monologues, and this Positive Thinking retreat imparts practical, life-enhancing knowledge and experiences that have traditionally been the province of clinical psychology offices and philosophy classes rather than spas. Palmilla’s oceanfront setting, which is alive with the music of waves rolling into shore, makes it easy to plug into the life force and feel the positive vibes that pervade the universe.
Perception is intentional, assert Palmilla yoga and meditation teachers Rhadha and Gopala Yaffe. We teach our clients to become fully conscious of their thoughts, their negative as well as positive patterns, and then we help them cultivate positivity to become calmer, more powerful, and more fulfilled.
Positive Thinking and Thought Power distills centuries of philosophical wisdom from Eastern and Western traditions in a weekend or week-long format. (Another benefit of this retreat is that you can book as many private classes as you wish, such as one-on-one meditation sessions, and Gopala can help suggest spa treatments that will support your evolution into a more positive consciousness.) While there are daily meditation sessions and yoga classes on the regular schedule at Palmilla, this retreat entails the study of some philosophy and yoga texts. (Gopala is certified in Sivananda yoga; he lived as a monk in India for about a decade and formerly ran the Sivananda ashram in the Bahamas.)
It’s my experience that most people are completely unaware of how many negative messages they transmit to themselves every day, Gopala says. Our retreat helps people learn how to meditate positively and without effort, how to positively accept challenges as opportunities rather than as crises, and how to perform at a higher level in personal and professional life “without struggle.
Private meditation classes help train the mind to define your negative thought patterns and triggers of same, Gopala explains. You also learn how to define positive goals and become more pointed and focused on achieving them. Guests also learn walking meditation and are encouraged to practice solitary walking meditation on the beach or the resort grounds. Various handouts are given to study at night, and participants take them home so that they can continue their positive practice.
Participants come away from this retreat with the direct experience of how positive thinking and thought power is our birthright, says Gopala. We are not on earth to suffer, we are here to experience the wonder of life. Now that’s positive thinking in action.
